B
Once when I was facing a decision that involved high risk, I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I?ve ever had: Be bold and brave ? and mighty (强大的) forces will come to your aid.
Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.
Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you can eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas ? even physical strength greater than most of us realize.
Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. ?In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,? said Tim. ?I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet ? and stopped him cold.?
Boldness ? a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme?is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.
So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities?and you?ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.
25. Why was the author sometimes unable to reach his goal in the past?
A. He faced huge risks. B. He lacked mighty forces.
C. Fear prevented him from trying. D. Failure blocked his way to success.
26. What is the implied meaning of the underlined part?
A. Swallow more than you can digest. B. Act slightly above your abilities.
C. Develop more mysterious powers. D. Learn to make creative decisions.
27. What can be learned from Paragraph 5?
A. Confidence grows more rapidly in adults. B. Trying without success is meaningless.
C. Repeated failure creates a better life. D. Boldness can be gained little by little.
C
The wallet is heading for extinction. As a day-to-day essential, it will die off with the generation who read print newspapers. The kind of shopping-where you hand over notes and count out change in return?now happens only in the most minor of our retail encounters, like buying a bar of chocolate or a pint of milk from a corner shop. At the shops where you spend any real money, that money is increasingly abstracted. And this is more and more true, the higher up the scale you go. At the most cutting-edge retail stores?Victoria Beckham on Dover Street, for instance?you don't go and stand at any kind of cash register when you decide to pay. The staff are equipped with iPads to take your payment while you relax on a sofa.
Which is nothing more or less than excellent service, if you have the money. But across society, the abstraction(抽象) of the idea of cash makes me uneasy. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned. But earning money isn't quick or easy for most of us. Isn't it a bit incredible that spending it should happen in half a blink(眨眼)of an eye? Doesn't a wallet?that time-honoured Friday-night feeling of pleasing, promising fatness?represent something that matters?
But I'll leave the economics to the experts. What bothers me about the death of the wallet is the change it represents in our physical environment. Everything about the look and feel of a wallet?the way the fastenings and materials wear and tear and loosen with age, the plastic and paper and gold and silver, and handwritten phone numbers and printed cinema tickets?is the very opposite of what our world is becoming. The opposite of a wallet is a smartphone or an iPad. The rounded edges, cool glass, smooth and unknowable as pebble(鹅卵石). Instead of digging through pieces of paper and peering into corners, we move our fingers left and right. No more counting out coins. Show your wallet, if you still have one. It may not be here much longer.
28. What is happening to the wallet?
A. It is disappearing. B. It is being fattened.
C. It is becoming costly. D. It is changing in style.
29. What makes the author feel uncomfortable nowadays?
A. Saving money is becoming a thing of the past.
B. The pleasing Friday-night feeling is fading.
C. Earning money is getting more difficult.
D. Spending money is so fast and easy.
30. Why does the author choose to write about what's happening to the wallet?
A. It represents a change in the modern world.
B. It has something to do with everybody's life.
C. It marks the end of a time-honoured tradition.
D. It is the concern of contemporary economists.
31. What can we infer from the passage about the author?
A. He is resistant to social changes.
B. He is against technological progress.
C. He feels reluctant to part with the traditional wallet.
D. He feels insecure in the ever-changing modern world.

One topic is rarely mentioned in all the talk of improving standards in our schools:the almost complete failure of foreign-language teaching. As a French graduate who has taught for more than twenty-five years.I believe I have some idea of why the failure is so total. 55 the faults already found out in the education system as a whole—such as child-centred learning, the “discovery” method, and the low expectations by teachers of pupils—there have been several serious 56 which have a direct effect on language teaching.
The first is the removal from the curriculum(课程) of the thorough teaching of English 57 .Pupils now do not know a verb from a noun, the subject of a sentence from its object,or the difference between the past, present,or future.
Another important error is mixed-ability teaching,or teaching in ability groups so 58 that the most able pupils are 59 and are bored while the least able are lost and 60 bored.
Strangely enough, few head teachers seem to be in favour of mixed-ability school football teams.
Progress depends on memory, and pupils start to forget immediately they stop having 61
lessons. This is why many people who attended French lessons at school, even those who got good grades, have forgotten it a few years later. 62 they never need it,they do not practise it.
Most American schools have accepted what is inevitable and 63 modern languages, even Spanish, from the curriculum.Perhaps it is time for Britain to do the same, and stop
64 resources on a subject which few pupils want or need.

Eating spaghetti (意大利面条) caught my eye. The word "spaghetti" brought back the _36_ of an evening at Uncle Alien's in Belleville (when) _37_ all of us were seated around the table and Aunt Pat (served) _38_ spaghetti for supper.(2004全国卷I)
36. A. memory B. thought C. knowledge D. experience
bring back“把……
With these words I began to (face) _36_ the problem, the problem of my telephone addiction. I used to call people _37_ , from the moment I woke up to the time I went to sleep. I (waited) _38_ to be phoned, I wanted to phone. Just one more call.(2004全国卷Ⅱ)
37. A. now and then B. all the time C. at home D. at work
It started socially — a few calls each day. It seemed (fine) _39_ , just a quick chat. Gradually though, the (situation) _40_ got worse. Soon it was _41_ use, until, finally, addiction. (2004
41. A. frequent B. regular C. unusual D. particular
I was phoning people and (leaving) _46_ messages to make sure _47_ calls would see me through the day.
47. A. long B. immediate C. enough D. surprising
52. laughed, then the whole class was laughing with open hearted enjoyment. I did my best not to show (pleasure) _53_ , but what I was feeling was pure happiness.
A. People B. Nobody C. Somebody D. I
At first, everyone on the team got _38_ playing time. Then the team moved up to the top division after winning all its games, and the _39_ started. Some parents, who had paid the coach extra so their daughters could have _40_ one-on-one training, got angry when she didn’t give them more playing time in our _41_ . The coach was replaced.
38. A. great B. equal C. right D. extra
39. A. business B. struggle C. attempt D. pressure
40. A. free B. private C. good D. basic
41. A. matches B. courses C. lessons D. programs
I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in LocustValley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
I examined the chick and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.
The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all — LUNCH!The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.
